Chest, Cassone, 17th Century, Portuguese, Baroque, Brazil, Hardwood
11238
This striking chest is made from a Brazilian hardwood which I have not been able to identify. The color and figuring of the timber together with the Classic form and ornamentation supplemented by the elaborate ironwork create a simple, bold aesthetic with gravitas.
The lid has a solid moulded edge with a small patch on the front. The front has a large moulded panel with a centered elaborate shaped iron escutcheon with the decorative iron hasp locates into. Below are three small drawers all with moulded panels and decorative iron handles. Faced with a rectangular skirt on later bun feet. The sides with large decorative iron handles. Exceptional color and patina.
