Chest, Coffer, 17 Century, German, Baroque, Oak, Marquetry, Inlay, 30 cubic feet
11244
This vernacular chest exudes character and charm. The moulded panels and inlay inject gravitas. It has a lovely mellow lustrous patina. It is unusual being large and providing a copious amount of storage space, just under 30 cubic feet but not massive and oversized. Its original function would have been to store textiles and/or clothing.
The top is made from three planks faced with a moulded edge. Later but most likely 18th century ring hinges. The front with four panels with raised sections each with an inlaid six point star in ebonised timber and box wood. The iron escutcheon and the lock replaced probably in the 19th century. On stile feet. Panelled ends. Exceptional original colour and patina. Second quarter of the 17th century.
Condition report: Stable and solid. Two old ring marks from water ingress from vases on the far left hand side of the top. Minor nibbles and losses throughout commensurate with age. Ring hinges 18th century, lock and escutcheon 19th century which are acceptable replacements for a functional piece of this nature.
Provenance: Private Collection. inside measurements 61.5" 156cm long, 20" 50.5cm deep , 16.5" 42 cm high
