A rare, late-16th/early-17th century, Italian, carved walnut marriage chest

The top with a cleated edge, and an old lable '2144, 400' underneath.

The interior has later hinges and lock. The frieze has carved scroll carving. The front has a central panel with a cartouche containing a refreshed, polychrome, coat of arms within trailing acanthus & tulip leaves. This is contained within a deppl and crisply carved, fishbone border with acanthus leaf corners. The female and male figures are finely carved and retain fragments of original gilding. The bottom has a deep, and crisp, carved gadrooned moulding.. Standing on claw feet. The sides retain, refreshed, gilded, geometric decoration. The handles are later.
