Plate Delftware, Inscribed 1744, Dutch, Great Yarmouth, Blue and White, Herring
11211
The inside centre decorated with the inscription, "Great Yarmouth 1744", surrounding the blazon of the arms of the town (three lions passant guardant in pale or with as many herrings naiant in pale argent) inside a medallion. The rim decorated with six Artemisia leaf reserves with diamond shaped panels containing dots and overpainted with crosses interposed. Restored. Decorated in blue on a white glaze. Restored. Probably Dutch, second quarter of the 18th century.
Literature: The coat of arms illustrated is one of three recorded at the Visitation of 1563, and is that in general use with the Motto 'Rex et nostra jura'. Nothing significant seems to have taken place in the year 1744 in Great Yarmouth, and there was not an election that year.
Signed/Inscribed: Great Yarmouth 1744
