In two parts. The plank top is made from one piece of cedar, which has some shrinkage cracks, and is faced with an applied, moulded edge. The frieze has a dentil moulding with an unusual and elegant, raised central section which aligns with the escutcheons and central line of the chest. There are two short drawers above three long drawers of varying height. The drawers are decorated with walnut cushion and geometric mouldings which are typical of the mid-to-late 17th century. They all have rosewood drawer fronts. The brass handles are modern, and the escutcheons and lock are 18th century replacements. The chest stands on replaced stile feet. The sides are panelled. Cedar is highly regarded for its rich, lustrous colour and patina which is of an exceptional standard on this chest. English, fourth quarter of the 17th century
