A rare early-18th century japanned chest of drawers on a faux-tortoishell ground

The plank top with a moulded edge and decorated with a chinoiserie scene of a man inside a fenced garden with a pheasant perched amongst foliage, a dog in the foreground and a bird flying overhead inside a linear border. The front with two short drawers, retaining their original re-gilded handles, and three long drawers with replaced re-gilded handles, the locks and escutcheons original. The drawers decorated with elegant figures in landscape scenes, birds, animals and floral sprays, and the insides in red and gold . The sides decorated with rectangular borders. Standing on re-placed bun feet. The carcass constructed from oak and pine, the drawers lined in oak. Decoration re-freshed (see photographs), some drawers re-lined. Excellent colour and patination. English, first quarter of the 18th century.
