A good, early-18th century, oak glazed cabinet

In two parts. The upper section with a cavetto, cornice above two glazed doors with original brass escutcheons, hinges and replaced lock. The interior fitted with two oak and pine shelves. One side with a tiny repair. The lower section with two fielded panel doors, with repairs to cracks and replaced period brass escutcheons and lock. The interior fitted with two oak and pine shelves. Standing on bracket feet. Excellent original colour and patina. English, second quarter of the 18th century.
The excellence of the proportion and the configuration, colour and patina of the oak create the dignified simplicity of this piece which is elegant and refined. Cabinets with glazed doors and interior shelves evolved during the last decade of the 17th century, and examples from the turn of the century are extremely rare. Early-18th century cabinets were specially designed for china and curios. Those with the upper portion glazed were marked by extreme simplicity in their structural characteristics, and therefore closely resemble bookcases and it is sometimes impossible to determine for which use they were intended.
