Fine, pair of 19th century, ottoman revival, canakkale, green and ochre, gilded and moulded, terracotta ewers
- Characteristic of the unique Canakkale Ottoman Revival style in form, composition and color - Canakkale was the most important centre of ceramic production during the Ottoman Empire. Edmunt Chishull observed in 1701 "…The town is ..Yet famous for a curious sort of earthen ware finely glazed, which is made here, and vended in great quantities…" (Travels in Turkey and Back to England, London 1747). - These ceramics were highly sought after in the 19th and early 20th century. - The form, coloring, relief, painted decoration and condition of this pair of ewers are exceptional.
