Cassone, 17th Century, Italian, Baroque, Vernacular, Walnut, Carved, Hearts
11251
This handsome cassone has ornament with romantic associations and was most likely a marriage chest. It is a good example of the Italian vernacular, simple in a sophisticated manner. The interior has a lot of storage space.
The single plank top sapwood at the front and back and an applied chip carved moulding on the front and solid moulded edges at the sides. A hole in the top which appears to have been made for coins. The front has two open geometric moulded panels set within a moulded edge containing crisply carved with a centered stylised four petal flowerhead with a heart on either side, flanked by two large flowerheads, possibly chrysanthemums, within circles. The ends each have a panel with a repeat of the four petal flowerhead and heart decoration in the centre. The front is faced with a moulded bottom section on front feet carved with a variant of the same decoration, the back feet are plain. The feet have been tipped. The sides are plain.
