Prior to 1900 marblewood usually implied either an artificial compound made from compressed shavings or a variegated ebony with a convoluted or marble figure. Late-16th and early-17th century inlaid and marquetry furniture associated with the lower Rhineland centres of Cologne and Achen and also with the contemporary production of German immigrants in Southwark sometimes includes veneers of a manufactured woody composite resembling marble or artificial graining
