The open top has a moulded cornice above a plain frieze decorated with brass studwork. The front is similarly decorated with a single door with a shaped moulded panel and a brass putti handle above a small brass shield. There are two shaped brass panels either side with brass studwork decoration. The sides have shaped moulded panels with similar decoration. The bottom has a deep moulding. Losses from old worm damage and to some brass studs. First half of the 17th century.
Bologna at this time was a Papal City of great importance, and was richer and more densely populated than Florence. This hanging cupboard is characteristic of Bologna with its raised panels and studs and, although infrequently seen today, in the early-17th century much fine furniture of this type was produced in Bologna. The brass, putti handle on this cupboard is quite charming and extremely rare, the shield indicates that it came from a fine household.
