The plank top in three, sections with a solid moulded edge. The original hinges lifting to reveal geometric panelling inside the lid with applied roundels. There is a removable, inner lid (not illustrated) which is probably later, and rests on framework around the top of the interior. The front is decorated with three, large geometric panel embellished with applied roundels and a frieze of applied roundels and carved acanthus leaves repeated below to disguise small drawers. The sides similarly decorated. Exceptional original colour and patina. Second half of the 17th century.

The strong geometric design and applied decoration are very unusual features on Spanish furniture. They give this cassone a formal feel and it was probably made for a grand household. The colour and patina are typically rich and lustrous.
