Bernard Rook (b.1938): Organic Waterscape Vase, 1960-1965
-Rare example of Rooke's oeuvre demonstrating his inventive artistic talents to the full - A rare example of Rooke's artistic work. Alongside this he had a large commercial output focussing on easily produced pottery which was made into lamps for the home furnishing market, - This sculptural, waterscape vase has been handmade using coiling, blocking and slabbing techniques. - - The raised patterning is suggestive of imprints on beaches and tidal riverbeds. The combination of dry and glazed finishes in natural tones of white, browns and blues are evocative of the colors and natural elements surrounding water. - Rook's works is held in international public and private collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Nuffield Foundation, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries, Leicester Museum, Buckinghamshire County Museum, Röhsska Museum in Sweden and the Trondheim Kunstmuseum in Norway. - This piece was made during 1960-1965, the time that Rooke was sharing a studio in Greenwich with Alan Wallwork and comes from a private collection along with a landscape vessel by Wallwork and a bottle by Robert Fournier that were acquired directly from the artists. These artists became part of a group of avant-garde potters who opened up new aesthetic and technical possibilities in ceramics.
