A rare, mid-18th century, delftware bowl
The interior decorated with the head and neck of a Chinese dragon pursuing a flaming pearl amongst stylized clouds. The exterior decorated with an extention of the body of the dragon. Restoration to the rim, fritting and glaze cracks. Probably London, third quarter of the 18th century. 91111314 .
Reference : British Delft at Williamsburg (Austen) no 67.
Bowls and dishes decorated with variations of this design, which starts on the interior and flips over the rim to extend around the exterior, were made in China for many years beginning in the Ming Period. English copies vary in both design and material, and soft paste porcelain examples survive as well as those in tin-glazed earthenware.
