A rare and exceptional, late-17th century, walnut armchair

The elegant, shaped cresting is surmounted with ears and three finials, two being replaced. The fine, shaped brackets on either side of the back counter-balance the cresting and are decorated with applied mouldings and turned pendents. The back containing a large, central, moulded panel. The lower back shaped and moulded with carved decoration above a hole for a finial which has been removed. The scroll arms joined to the seat with reel and fillet turnings which are repeated throughout the base of the chair. The seat is in two sections and faced with a moulded edge. The turned legs are joined by a turned, high front stretcher and side and central stretchers. The back stretcher is also turned and spliced. Excellent colour and patina.
