A late-17th century, Italian hanging from the collection of the late Sir Philip Sassoon

The panel comprising sections of claret coloured velvet separated with gold-metal thread braid, and applied with alternating bands of arabesque motifs and scrolling foliate designs. The top section with velvet buttons suspending gilt threads which are interlinked and held in place by elaborate knops and with pendant metal and silk thread passmenterie tassels. The lower edge worked with elaborate leaf designs and with pierced metal thread braid in shaped sections applied across the scalloped lower edge.

The late Sir Philip Sassoon (1888-1939) who was a glamorous and well-known figure in Britain for the first four decades of the 20th century. He was the most eligible bachelor and the greatest host of his time. He attained prominence in the art world, high society and politics.
