SANDERS, PHILLIP (B1938) SIGNED AND DATED 1987 LOWER RIGHT "It is essential good art should take ones breath away, whatever medium. The artist and the audience should be able to live with a piece of art for many years regardless of whether or not it is currently fashionable." the artist Best known for his racing scenes and drawing inspiration from Stubbs, Munnings, for his use of colour, Ben Marshall for the theatre that he was able to capture within his paintings and Modigliani for the simplicity of his imagery. This work captures a split second of the race and the spontaneity, drama and adrenalin of the jump so the viewer feels that they are there watching each horse and jockey navigating the brush fence in a different way. Sanders use of colour is masterful creating movement and drama in the sky and the grass. Sanders gives a lot of consideration to the framing of the work and this oeuvre is unusual being a large screen. Exhibited H C Dickens, 41 Dover Street, Piccadilly, W1, 11-20th November 1987 A similar flat racing scene is in the National Horse Racing Museum, Newmarket.
