Striking, large, bold compositions retaining the delicacy of these wild flowers, Characteristic of the artist's oeuvre in the 1980's The vibrant palette reflects the pure intensity of the colouring of the flowers.
Danka Napiorkowska My early years were spent in Devon. It was nearly 20 years before I returned to the Westcountry to live, this time to Cornwall, via London and North Yorkshire.
Very loosely I'd say the 60s were spent in London enjoying being a student; the 70s were devoted to Lustre Pottery; the 80s/90s to printmaking and the design and production of tile panels/murals; also the 90s were the start of the big pastel paintings. The decorated bone china appeared about 2010.
My inspiration has always come from what I see around me. Today that is the stunning North Cornwall coast and beaches, the green lanes and hedgerows and my beautiful garden where I grow interesting things to draw. My colourful pastels often depict the rich harvest of the Cornish sea; lobsters, crabs, mackerel and scallops amongst them.
In 1993, for her exhibition at Gallery Tresco, Danka radically changed her way of working and started using soft pastels to create the large vibrant paintings that have become her signature. In the early years these paintings were of flowers, many grown especially in her garden. Wonderful single blooms (Camellias, Parrot Tulips, Peonies) or groups of smaller flowers (Snowdrops, Nasturtiums and Pansies) In time foodie subjects took over and now her major theme is predominantly fish and shellfish. She has exhibited at and is represented in many public collections such as the V&A.
