RELATED TO : Keith Vaughan, Soldier Writing Home, 1941

During the war, while stationed in Wiltshire and later in Yorkshire, Vaughan was unable to paint large-scale subjects or make oil paintings. His work of this period was largely confined to sketchbooks and small-scale works on paper. Vaughan recorded the daily activities of his army comrades. Here a young soldier sits, just by his back pack, traveling (as the title indicates), on a raft. The soldier's demeanou is nonchalant, reclined yet holding his head straight as he takes a nap. Vaughan has imbued the figure with a certain classical nobility, the face almost a mask, framed with dark shadows.
