Juan or Joan Ponc, Spanish (1927-1984)
Born 28th November 1927 in Barcelona.
Juan Ponc was a pupil of Ramon Rogent. His first works were influenced in turn by the Expressionists, the representation of magic symbols and primitive civilisations. He was one of the founders with Tapies, Cuixart and Tharrats of the Dau al Set group which marked the reappearance in 1948 of a Spanish school relating to current events.
Ponc's production from 1949 to 1953 still bears the mark of his previous 'magic' style, despite his central role in the group, he never adopted the informal abstraction characteristic of the group as a whole. Monsteres, burlesque figures and accessories of magic are deployed against surrealist landscapes. The colour is disturbing, sometimes phosphorescent, the detail is meticulously modelled.
In 1953, after a stay in Paris in the hands of Joan Miró, a mention in the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1955, provided a scholarship to study in Brazil. In that year he founded the group 'Taull'.
In 1964 he returned to Catalonia. In 1965 he was given the Grand Prize of the International Drawing Biennial.
After his stay in Brazil, he retained the basic elements of his style and magic subject matter while returning to a more direct naturalism and subsequently came out openly with allusions to 'metaphysical' geometricism.
Died 4th April 1984 in St-Paul-de-Vence, France.

Juan Ponc first exhibited in 1946, taking part in numerous collective exhibitions, including the 1976 Venice Biennale. He has had solo shows since 1945, Museum of Modern Art Sao Paulo (1957) Rheinisches Museum Bonn (1968), Musee d'Art Moderne Paris (1978), FIAC (Fiore Internationale d'Art Contemporain) Paris and the Accademia Spagnola di Belle Arti Rome (1980), Fundacio la Caixa Barcelona (1985 & 1987)
Romania National Museum of Art (2007) - an exhibition of Spanish art of the twentieth century. 27 works by artists (including Juan Ponc, Antoni Tapies, Antonio Saura) that influenced the evolution of Spanish art at the end of the postwar period, provided by the Collection Art of the "la Caixa" Foundation.
