In two parts. The bureau with a fall front and brushing slide on both sides. The front with a later escutcheon, lock and hinges, opening to reveal an interior writing pad with replaced leather. The fitted interior with five pigeon holes above a drawer with original brass knobs and two secret compartments containing drawers. The frieze with two lopers once incised with the initials "EVH" and the other "HA". The birdcage support resting on a turned stem with three cabriole legs extending into pad feet. Excellent original colour and patina. English, second quarter of the 18th century.

This is an extremely rare bureau, and there is no other, known, recorded example of a similar example. The tripod base gives the bureau elegance without compromising on functionality. It was probably made in two parts so that the bureau could be lifted off the base and be easily taken either out of the home, or moved from room to room.
