Delightful pair of chinoiserie plates evoking how exotic the East appeared to Europe and a sense of wonder it portrayed.

Painted with a chinoiserie scene of a tall lady standing in a garden holding an exotic bird with another lady watching from within a house. Surrounded by four repeats of an artemisia leaf border. The rim decorated with four repeats of trailing stems, the edge brown The back rim and under-rim painted with double circle borders. Rim chips. Probably Liverpool, third quarter of the 18th century.
