TALL OVOID SHAPE. THE MASK OF A WINGED ANGEL AND PENDANT CRAB CLAWS ENCLOSING THE LABEL 'DIASCORDIV'. DECORATED IN BLUE ON A WHITE GLAZE. IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. LAMBETH, CIRCA 1680.
THE INSCRIPTION IS AN ABBREVIATION OF E.DIASCORDIUM WHICH WAS A REMEDY OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AND USED AGAINST THE PLAGUE. THE ORIGINAL FORMULA INCLUDED IN THE LONDON PHARMACOPEIA OF 1618 WAS PREPARED FROM MANY INGREDIENTS AND WAS LATER REDUCED TO SCORDIUM, OPIUM AND SYRUP OF MECONIUM.
