A fine, mid-18th century Irish, Cuban, mahogany sidetable

The chamfered, plank top with minor repairs to cracks and a deep, cushion-moulded edge. The frieze with a single drawer with original escutcheon and lock, and replaced handles. The cabriole legs with anthacus leaves carved on the knees. Standing on ball and claw feet with a small repair to the left back foot claws. The carcass oak and pine, the drawer lined in oak. Excellent colour and patina. Second quarter of the 18th century.
The use of fine, Cuban mahogany illustrates the quality of Irish furniture at this time. The cabinet maker has had to chamfer the thick top to soften the line of the top by creating a deep, moulded edge. The quality of the carving is very fine and the claw feet give the piece stature.
There is probably no variety of furniture in which there is a greater diversity of treatment than in side tables dating from the first half of the 18th century. 'A little table with a drawer' was a common entry in inventories of the time.
