A rare early-18th century fruitwood side table

The plank top with a moulded edge. The frieze with a single drawer retaining its original ring handle but with later back-plate. Standing on baluster, ball and columnar turned legs joined by stretchers unusually shaped on three inside returns. Standing on bun feet, one replaced and one repaired. Excellent original colour and patination. English, first quarter of the 18th century.
This is a rare example of late-17th century provincial furniture, illustrating a significant transition in the evolution of the sidetable. After the Restoration, the French fashion for shaped-stretchers and bun feet was incorporated into the form of fine tables and stands by English carpenters as an alternative to the standard straight, turned, stretcher.
