Surviving long sets of practical, period, dining chairs are rare. This long set of walnut, dining side and armchairs is visually impressive with the elegant, barley-twist turnings, verdure, tapestry upholstery and, most importantly, extremely comfortable. The carpenter who made these chairs was very skilled working to the highest standard using walnut, which is sought after for its grain and lustre, and turning the uprights and the elegant barley-twist legs from one piece of timber which is very difficult. The original, verdure, tapestry upholstery matches on each chair back and seat and has, unusually, been used on the reverse of the chair backs so that the visual effect of the tapestry will not be diluted from any angle. Collectively these chairs look magnificent, either placed around a dining table or, with the sidechairs as decoration placed against a wall, and the two armchairs being used for functional, conversation/easy seating.
